I've often wondered if I'm doing what I'm "supposed" to be doing with my life. But when I look back, I see little glimpses of tendencies I've had, actions I've taken, all of which have helped define where I am today. As a kid, it was Legos that all had to be the same color to complete the build and then styling them for a photoshoot with my Dad’s medium-format camera. It was keeping all my magazines PRISTINE and not tattered, and even organizing my Haribo gummy bears by color before DEVOURING them. All of these a forecast of what was to come, developing an eye for details and desire for things to be just right...PARTICULAR.
Little did I know how great those principles would serve me later in life. I think one of the best ways to find what you’re “supposed” to do in life is to find the things you can’t HELP but do. For me, that’s continuing to apply a critical eye to the things I create and applying a critical process to the problems that are brought before me as a designer. Now, as a husband and a father, the STAKES are much higher, but the pursuit is still the same, to make things I’m proud of, things that are just right.
Come to think of it, I’m still making things the right color so they look good for the photoshoot…
